- slam poem of Phillip’s
“Pr. Phillip enjoys creating ‘slam poetry’ – which
is as much about the performance as it is the content. But here’s
one called “Running.”
Some people run
to get fit. Others run to escape. I run sometimes just to feel the wind
in my face and the desperation of my lungs as they suck in the life-giving
air I far too often take for granted. Slanted my life too far to the selfish
side. Ranted my way to a poor attitude or crude anger, rude language,
and mood-altering pity parties attended by the sorriest sinner I know.
Then I said to myself, “Self – let’s run.”
Run & gun your way to success.
Run for fun now that life’s begun again – reviewed, renewed,
and re-fueled to run at optimum performance. Finding God’s smile
like a nitro pill for the heart or a nitro blast for my race-car life
busy running away from stuff that isn’t worth the victory lap.
So I run - roughshod over people I say I love. And I run - repeatedly
into the same looping habits I say I given up. And I run – royally
to the throne of One who’s done with lone … ranger mentalities
and me-myself-and-I dramas. And I run – headlong into One Who’s
running headlong at me.
Head-on collisions are usually bad news, camera crews, something
oozing making us lose our appetites. But here instead is a loving, giving,
raving crash of my selfish pride and my selfless Guide – for life.
What’s the rush? Where are you running? Why are you running?
How are you gonna KEEP running so far, so fast, so flashy and glitzy and
hidden under that number taped on your chest for the race of life that
so few seem to really ‘win?’
Maybe you’re quite sure you’re running. Did you know
you’re being chased?
